India is an agriculture country. Agriculture sector holds an important place in income and employment. The success or failure of Indian company is depending on agriculture sector. Agriculture sector holds an important place in income and employment. The importance of agriculture sector can be explained from the following points:
Importance of Agriculture Sector:
(1) For national income:
The share of agriculture has decrease to some extent in the national income of India but it is still remarkable. E.g. In 1950-51, its share in national income was 55.85%. It went down to 25%. The development of agriculture is necessary for the rapid in national income.
(2) For employment:
India is a country made of villages in rural areas main source of employment is agriculture and agriculture related sectors. During planning, industries and service sector developed but been today around 60% of he total labour is employed in agriculture. To solve the problem of rural unemployment, agriculture sector plays an important role.
(3) For industrial development:
In our Indian economy, industrial sector play an important role for providing raw material for industrial unit. For example, for cloth, jute, sugar, and industries the raw material is provided by agriculture sector.
(4) For food security:
India is a developing country. In developing countries, the people spend major share of their income on the purchase of foodgrains. During planning, due to development and over population, to meet the demand of foodgrains for food security, agriculture development is necessary. If a country depends for foodgrains on other countries, in he case o war or emergency, the country has o face political crisis. Very often, it becomes dangerous for the political freedom of the country.
(5) To solve the problem of poverty:
In India, the problem of rural poverty is more serious than urban poverty because India is a country made of village. Most of the people in the villages are dependent on agriculture and agriculture related sector for income and employment. In these circumstances, if agriculture development takes place, the people can earn more and they may get employment. Thus, the problem of poverty can be solved.
(6) Increase in exports:
In India, agriculture sector holds an important place directly or indirectly in total export income. In our exports, tea, coffee, oil seeds, spices tobacco and fruits are our major exports. Moreover, cloth, juts, sugar etc. become helpful exports indirectly.
